RELIGION KILLS / PRACTICE REASON

The entire world knows what happened on September 11, 2001. The entire world knows why it happened. Yet a full five years after the fact, the alleged defenders of Western Civilization and of one of its greatest products, the inalienable right to freedom of speech and press, cannot bring themselves to identify the raw evil that forms the ideology behind this rabid new anti-humanism. Indeed, rather than embrace the logical alternative to supernaturalism, which is of course reason, even the victimized people of America have instead sought refuge from militant, fundamentalist religion in... more religion. What is wrong with this picture? Stockholm Syndrome writ large?

The latest outrage in this sorry situation has been the response of American government and American businesses alike in the wake if the now-infamous Danish "Muhammed Bombhead" cartoons. Our pusillanimous elected officials have turned their backs (once again,) on the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution - the same Constitution they swore an oath to uphold and defend - in a number of craven condemnations, not commendations, of those cartoonists and journalists. They have essentially committed the same betrayal here that they committed against author Salman Rushdie some sixteen years ago.

Most major religions have held aloft the trophy for Most Tyrannical World Religion at one time or another in history. Four hundred years ago it was Christianity, today it's Islam. Tyranny is tyranny, and religion is uniquely constructed to dovetail with the slaughter of vast quantities of human beings. The question is, why do people remain silent about the continued, willful ingestion of a known toxin?

Aside from the extreme of terrorism, there are less-virulent yet worrisome strains all around us:

- the continued peddling of socialism under Christianity's so-called "liberation theology";

- the Gaia-worshipping pagan religion of "environmentalism" that seeks to drag us back to the intellectual and material squalor of the Dark Ages via the destruction of industrial civilization;

- the omnipresent push among America's Christian fundamentalists to obliterate the wall of separation between church and state;

- the attack on basic science instruction that goes under the names of "creationism" and "intelligent design";

- the despicable confiscation of our right to personal consumption - the smoking bans, the "sin" taxes, the seatbelt and helmet laws, the (at least partial) criminalization of gambling, sex, alcohol and tobacco where no coercion is present. (see Jefferson: "The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others.")

Time to cut through the B.S., d'ya think? A blunt reality check is just what the doctor ordered. Get yours today and speak up! Enough is enough.
